Jhalakati is getting medical college. The Department of Public Works has sent a proposal to set up a medical college on the premises of Jhalokati Sadar Hospital. Jhalokati Public Works Department has already selected the site and the building plan Jhalokati Deputy Commissioner. Signed by Johar Ali. Executive Engineer of Jhalokati Public Works Department Faisal Alam confirmed the matter to the media on Monday (February 8).

Engineer Faisal Alam said Amir Hossain Amu, MP of Jhalokati-2 (Sadar-Nalchiti) constituency and a member of the Awami League’s advisory council, had also signed the plan as a DO letter. The plan for the next process has been sent to the Central Public Works Department. Although Jhalokati Sadar Hospital was established in 1973, it had 50 beds in 1984. In 2003, with the administrative permission of 100 beds, the overall activities were carried out with a manpower of 50 beds. Despite getting administrative permission for 100 beds in 2003, the Ministry of Health approved the recruitment of the same number of manpower in 2022.

The multi-storied building of the 250-bed hospital was inaugurated on 11 August 2016. The construction of the building is nearing completion. One acre of 40 percent land is required for the construction of a building with a 12-story foundation for setting up a medical college on the land including the dosha at the back of the 100-bed Jhalakati Sadar Hospital. The rest of the land can be used as building ground. The site has been selected after the on-site inspection of the district building construction committee.

There are 36 direct medical colleges in the country. There are 10 medical colleges in the Dhaka division, 6 in the Chittagong division, 5 in the Rajshahi division, 5 in the Khulna division, 3 in the Mymensingh division, 3 in Sylhet division, 3 in Rangpur division, and 2 in Barisal division. The total number of seats in these medical colleges is 4350 and this number is increasing almost every year.

Dhaka Medical College, established at Bakshibazar in Dhaka during British rule in 1947, is the first government medical college in the country. Besides, like government colleges, every private college has to be affiliated with a university and get approval from Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council. Almost every year a new medical college is established under private management. The number of private medical colleges was 65 in 2013 and 6 in 2014. The number of such medical colleges was 69 in 2016 and 80 in 2020.
