The University Grants Commission (UGC) has sent a letter to the private university to make necessary preparations for the implementation of this procedure. The officials said that they have received a positive response from them in this regard. The officials said that the students of private universities do not get time for research and other extra-curricular activities as they are busy all year round under the present system.
He said that in order to meet the challenges of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, every graduate must have an entrepreneurial attitude and think critically. The OBE system is very important for making such graduates and it is necessary to introduce a semester system for this. ‘ Earlier, a letter had been sent to the registrars of all private universities in the country on August 9, 2021 stating, “If students are admitted without two semesters in a year after 2021, it will not be acceptable to the commission.” It is said to have two semesters from July 2022. According to him, UGC wants to make it effective from this year.
On a quarterly basis, students have 14 weeks to complete a semester. This means they need at least 42 weeks to complete their syllabus. So they get only 10 weeks left in a year for something else. In the new semester system, students and teachers will be busy for only 36 weeks in a year and 18 weeks in each term and they will spend the remaining 18 weeks in research, seminars, paper writing, relaxation, and extracurricular activities. If the private universities do not change their academic activities under the new semester system, then the UGC will not allow the universities to offer new courses. “We have talked to the partners of the private university and they have agreed to our initiative,” Biswajit Chand told the media.
