Steps taken by the authorities to avoid accidents on the highway
Steps were taken by authorities to avoid accidents on the highway of Khulna University. Work is underway to repair a four-lane road on Zeropoint-Gallamari road in front of the main gate of Khulna University. Almost 70% of progress has already been made. Heavy vehicles like long-distance four-wheelers like buses, trucks, pickups, private cars, microbuses, lorries, covered vans, etc. are moving at reckless speeds.
In order to prevent any kind of accident, in front of the main gate, in front of Gallamari Bazar Road, foot-over bridge, zebra crossings, road crossing signals, warnings need to be given on an emergency basis. The risk of accidents and deaths of teachers, students, officials, and employees is increasing due to crossing the road. University students have expressed fears that a major unforeseen accident could happen at any moment.
In order to avoid accidents on the Khulna-Satkhira highway in front of the university, it has become urgent to build speed breakers and overbridges. University authorities have already been alerted to avoid any untoward accidents. The Khulna University authorities have already sent an urgent letter to the Roads and Highways Department, Khulna Executive Engineer in this regard. The letter, signed by Khulna University Registrar (Acting) Professor Khan Golam Quddus, states that work is underway on a four-lane road adjacent to the main gate of Khulna University.
The road is being used as the main road for university students. About 200 vehicles of university students, ambulances, teachers, students, officials, and employees ply on this road every day. But every day hundreds of vehicles on different routes travel at very high speeds and accidents often happen. Currently, the main gate has become very accident-prone which is very risky for the students as well as everyone associated with the university.
In addition to the IER building under construction, the medical center, and the government Deldar Ahmed Secondary School on the opposite side of the road, hundreds of students cross the road every day. In view of this precarious location, a total of two-speed bumps and an overbridge, including one in front of the main gate of the university, one in front of the IER building under construction, and one in front of the medical center, need to be constructed immediately.
Going to the ground, it can be seen that the road in front of the main gate of the university, the picture in front of Gallamari Bazar Road is the same. Students and others are struggling to cross the road. Compared to the main gate of the university, the students rent mess houses. They have to suffer a lot to cross the road to perform all the work starting from university classes. However, there is no warning on the road. Though there is talk of construction of foot over the bridge here, it has not been tendered yet.
According to the Department of Roads and Highways (RHD), the progress of the project is 80% complete and the rest of the work will be completed by June. The work order for upgrading the 4 km road from Moylapota junction to Zero Point into 4 lanes was given on April 7, 2020. Farhana Naz Bonny of Bangla Discipline said that many students of the university, especially female students, live in residential areas opposite the main gate of the university. Long-distance vehicles and heavy goods trucks move recklessly along the road. They always have to take risks while crossing the road. The administration should take immediate action because life comes first.
