Private universities start 2 semesters a year from January. Since January 2023, a two-semester system is being introduced in all private universities in the country instead of three semesters. In the meantime, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has informed these universities about this decision. The UGC said the initiative was aimed at improving the quality of education in these institutions of higher learning, as well as breaking out of the culture of a tendency to finish courses and enhancing students’ skills in handwriting.

The UGC has also failed miserably in its initiative to curb the three-semester system a year in private universities. The commission had earlier sent letters to all private universities several times instructing a two-semester system. But this time the commission is determined to implement the directive. And the new private universities that have been approved, have been instructed to introduce a two-semester system from the beginning.

Omar Farooq, director of UGC’s private university department, said the two-semester system would be introduced in private universities from January 2023. This will increase the quality of education. Students will gain skills in practical aspects. Public universities admit students only once a year. Throughout the year the student is given time to master the subjects well. In developed countries, there are two semesters per year in ‘Spring’ and ‘Fall’. And in our country, students are admitted three times a year in spring, fall and winter.

One semester every four months. Before a one-semester lesson is well mastered, another moves away. In this way, the students go to the job market and fall behind in inefficiency. Again every semester the student has to be re-admitted with a huge amount of money. Universities are teaching like that. That is why we are asking you to teach in two semesters to follow a standard guideline.
