Students will have the opportunity to change departments at DU. In order to reduce the additional pressure on the admitted students, it has been decided to cancel the admission test of the ‘D’ unit in Dhaka University from 2021-22. Students will get the opportunity to change the department even if there is no d unit. A meeting of the General Admission Committee of DU on Monday approved the preliminary decision not to conduct separate admission tests in the D unit.
According to the DU authorities, the reason for not keeping the D unit was that the admission test was conducted in the D unit for the students who wanted to study subjects of other departments outside their own department. This would put extra pressure on the students. In addition, students had to travel to the examination center with a separate application fee to participate in the admission test.
Considering these issues, a separate admission test in the D unit has been canceled. In this context, DU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Md. Akhtaruzzaman said, “We have taken this decision to alleviate the suffering of the students.” From now on, students will not have to take separate exams for changing departments. Instead, students will be able to change the department with the admission test in their own department. Meanwhile, a DU source said that a Deans’ sub-committee has been formed to decide how the subjects of other departments can be given the admission test in their own department.
The committee has been asked to give its opinion in due course. A committee is working to make it easier for students to change departments. The matter will be finalized in the Academic Council after receiving the report of the committee. In a meeting of the Deans Committee in 2020, the issue of cancellation of the D unit was brought to the fore by DU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Md. Akhtaruzzaman. After discussing the issue, most deans supported the vice-chancellor’s proposal. Later a preliminary decision was taken to cancel the D unit.
