On March 25, the army launched a massive attack in which there were heavy casualties. Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib was arrested and flown to West Pakistan. Before that, he declared the independence of Bangladesh. Eventually, on Dec. 3, 1971, the Indian army invaded the territory of its neighbor. The Pakistani army surrendered on December 16.

Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was released from jail and returned to a hero’s welcome, assuming leadership of the new Bangladesh government in January 1972.

What is the significance of the liberation war?
The Great Liberation War of 1971 is a very glorious event in our national history. The liberation war began on March 26, 1971, with the aim of final liberation from Pakistani exploitation. In exchange for nine months of war and many sacrifices, the final victory and independence were achieved. As a result of this war, independent and sovereign Bangladesh emerged on the world map. We are known to the world as citizens of a free country. We have got a land of our own and a flag. Therefore, the significance of the Liberation War for Bangladesh is immense.

How was the Liberation Army organized?
After the formation of the Mujibnagar government on April 10, 1971, an initiative was taken to form the Liberation Army with the military-civilian population to conduct the Liberation War. The government divided Bangladesh into 11 sectors. In addition, several sub-sectors and three brigade forces were formed. These forces were joined by members of the Bengali army, officers, soldiers, police, EPR, navy and air force. In every sector, there were regular soldiers, guerrillas and ordinary fighters. They were known as freedom fighters or freedom fighters. In these forces, students, youth, women, farmers, laborers, and people from different walks of life participated.
